county_linePRODUCTS: Lettuce, salad greens, kale, chard, fennel, chicories, upland cress, radishes, turnip mixes, carrots, cippolini onions, baby leeks, fennel, baby summer squash, basils, parsley and sage

FARMLAND: 28 acres southwest of Petaluma, located 30 miles from the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

PEOPLE: David Retsky plus 3-4 full-time and around 12 part-time workers.

FARM HISTORY/PHILOSOPHY: David was raised in Los Angeles but rejected the urban life early on. He attended the UC Santa Cruz Farm and Garden Apprenticeship Program in 1994 then spent the majority of his 20s traveling and working on farms internationally and around the US. In 2000, at the age of 29, he started County Line Harvest.

SOIL: County Line is surrounded by pastureland, making chicken and cow manure easy to come by for composting. The farm also incorporates a fair amount of green plant  material back into the soil. County Line is in full production year-round, but around 25% of the land is cover cropped at any given time.

WEED CONTROL: Tractor cultivation, hand-weeding and gentle disking.

PEST MANAGEMENT: Floating row covers protect the crops from pests. The cold nights and windy conditions, along with crop diversity and nearby wildlife habitat, also help keep pest populations low.

WATER USE: Overhead irrigation from an on-farm reservoir

ORGANIC CERTIFICATION: Marin Organic since 2002

FUN FACT: The first time David walked around the land, he ran into a sign announcing the line between Marin and Sonoma counties. He says the name County Line Harvest came to him right there and then.
