Intro to Backyard Chickens with Nicole Kramer
Saturday, March 9, 2013 - 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Nicole Kramer, urban homesteader and owner of FARMcurious, divulges tricks and techniques for successfully keeping chickens in the city. From deciphering municipal codes and keeping your neighbors happy to locating free sources of food, the class will cover all you need to know about keeping backyard chickens.
Nicole will cover the perks of keeping chickens, along with some of the pitfalls to help you determine whether this hobby is right for your lifestyle. She'll then move on to selecting breeds that fit your circumstances and creating the perfect urban chicken environment. The class will cover feeding, housing, and caring for chickens throughout the different stages of their lives. Nicole will offer fun facts and helpful advice throughout the class, empowering participants to get started on their chicken-keeping journey.
Nicole will also bring some tasty homemade treats to demonstrate the superior flavor of fresh eggs vs. store-bought eggs. For anyone interested, there will be an optional follow-up visit on Sunday, March 10, from 11am-1pm, to Nicole's farm in Oakland to see the chickens in person.
This event is co-hosted by Urban Kitchen SF and CUESA. It will take place at the Ferry Building in the CUESA outdoor kitchen in the south arcade. The cost is $48. Sliding scale pricing available; email email@example.com for details.
