20th Anniversary of the One-Time Ferry Plaza Harvest Market

In 2013, CUESA will celebrate 20 years of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, but this September marks the anniversary of the Ferry Plaza Harvest Market, a one-time event that was wildly successful and planted the seeds for the world-class farmers market that thousands of local food lovers flock to today.
On September 12, 1992, the San Francisco Public Market Collaborative hosted a one-time Ferry Plaza Harvest Market. More than 50 regional farmers sold produce, and some of San Francisco's best-known restaurants prepared street food for the occasion. More than 10,000 people attended the event, generating $75,000 in sales. While the City initially resisted the idea of a permanent market at the Ferry Plaza, ultimately, the Harvest Market was such a success that the following spring, the weekly Ferry Plaza Farmers Market was inaugurated.

Join CUESA on September 15 to commemorate the market's inception and the community of farmers, chefs, and eaters who have helped it to grow over the years:
10 am – 1 pm: Stop by the CUESA Classroom and share your memories. Bring your old photos and share what the market has meant to you, your family, and community over the last 20 years.
11 am: Join us for a cooking demo with Joyce Goldstein, a local culinary luminary and long-time supporter of the market. She’ll share stories of how the market has grown over the years while she cooks up a delectable fig and tomato recipe.
11:45 am: Learn to eat well with Chef Charles Vollmar, cooking instructor, food consultant, writer, and owner of Epicurean Exchange, just one of the many small businesses in our famers market community.
Where: the CUESA Classroom (under the white tents in front of the Ferry Building), This event is FREE, with recipes and samples for all.
